Paul Armstrong, founder of TBD Group, was invited to write the lead essay for Issue 5 of Risk Quarterly, the publication that sits on the desks of senior risk professionals across banking, insurance, reinsurance and beyond.
The invitation was to write about AI and governance, and Paul approached it the way he approaches most things: by asking what people in the room actually need to hear rather than what they would find comfortable. The essay examines where current governance frameworks are running behind the technology they are supposed to oversee, what that gap costs organisations in practice, and what more honest thinking about AI risk actually requires from leadership teams who are used to having clearer maps than this territory provides.
Risk Quarterly is not a trade publication people skim. It is read carefully by people whose professional function is to anticipate what goes wrong and account for it before it does. Being asked to lead the issue is a reflection of the conversations TBD Group has been having with clients across exactly those sectors, and the essay tries to be as useful as those conversations rather than defaulting to the reassuring version of the story.
